By now, most fans know that the Steelers drafted a running back in the first round (No. 13 overall) and traded up to get Montgomery.
Now, according to ESPN’s Field Yates, they’re in position to add another in the future.
Yates reported Thursday that the team is in “active discussions” with Bengals running back Giovani Bernard about a potential return to the team.
Bernard, a third-round pick, is on track to be the Steelers’ starting running back next season, and the Bengals will likely look to trade him to the Steelers in the event he opts to return.
That would send the Bengals to the NFL playoffs for the first time since 2013.
The Bengals could also look to move forward with running back Cedric Benson, who is on the final year of his rookie deal and is reportedly willing to take a pay cut.
The Bengals could use a backup, and with Benson likely to get paid, it would be wise to keep him around.
